Vineyards & Winemaking
Selection of varieties
There are two vineyards in Barcelos: one in the parish of Santa Eulália de Rio Covo (reconverted from 2002) with 7ha and another located in the parish of Silva (planted in 1989 and 1997) with 2.7ha.
The white varieties planted are Loureiro, Arinto, Fernão Pires, Alvarinho, Moscatel Galego Branco (Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains), Trajadura and Sauvignon Blanc. In reds we have Padeiro de Basto and Vinhão (Sousão). In the mid-twentieth century, the main vineyard of Quinta de Paços was made with an unusual combination of white grape varieties – Alvarinho, Arinto, Loureiro and Fernão Pires – which gave rise to a wine that was highly renowned in the region and we now recreated in our Casa de Paços “Family Blend” Superior.
Cradle of Alvarinho
In Monção, the vineyard at Casa do Capitão-mor has around 8.5ha planted exclusively with the Alvarinho variety. The oldest vines on this property were planted in the late 1980s and still having some centenary examples in the traditional driving system of the sub-region.
The wines are made and certified in the Integrated Production system (EU environmental sustainability standards) using good phytosanitary protection practices, without the use of pesticides or animal additives in their stabilization, being suitable for Vegetarian and Vegan diets.
